Don Tiki Live at the Doris Duke Theater (12-15-2012)

This was our 4th Don Tiki Show and certainly not our last.   We were turned on to Exotica Jazz in 2005.  What is Exotica Jazz?  Check out this website: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exotica.

The first Don Tiki show we saw was held at the Hawaiian Hut-Ala Moana Hotel.   Beautiful dancers paraded the aisles in costumes with giant cocktail glasses on their heads.  One singer also balanced a large tiki on her head laugh singing the entire song.  The characters, the vibes, the percussions and the animal calls were so memorable, we couldn't wait to attend our next Don Tiki Show.  That next show was at the Turtle Bay Resort under the moon and stars (2006).   Willow Chang danced and sang.  The next was at the Aloha Tower Marketplace on Valentine's day (2010) featuring Star Kalahiki.   Each venue offered a different show filled with surprises and a sense of escapism.

This Hot Lava Holiday show was held at the Doris Duke Theater at the Honolulu Academy of Arts. An indication of the energy in this room----a prelude of animal sounds and chanting by a restless audience (aka natives) precluded the show.  Entertainment all around us! How fun! This particular show was a tribute to the memory of Fritz Hassenpusch, former Don Tiki's 'Delmar deWilde'.   We're pretty sure he was there in spirit with the rest of the gang.

Mahalo Don Tiki! & Best wishes in Seattle (Benaroya Hall) and in Los Angeles (Walt Disney Concert Hall) Enjoy these captured golden moments.  Bravo DON TIKI! & Don't Stop The Music!

Christmas with Funkshun at Ige's Restaurant & 19th Puka (12-7-2012)

Ho, Ho, Ho! Our first Christmas dance party of the year!  With a tall Santa wearing rubber slippahs and his funky elves all dressed in teal and black, and wearing fedora hats!   The stage was decked out with twinkling Christmas lights and snowflakes - very festive!   It's a good thing we arrived early at Ige's Restaurant & 19th Puka.  The house was packed with Hawaii '74, Pearl City '80 and Aiea '79 alumna celebrating.   This swarm caused the dance floor to be smaller than usual.  Nevertheless, dancers made do with whatever floor space was afforded to them.  Evening activities included a secret Santa grab bag, tons of door prizes, a chocolate Santa candy eating contest, and Santa doing the Gang-ham Style dance (~hey, sexy lady, wop, wop, wop, wop, oppa gagnamstyle!~) We scored one of Mona Fukumoto's goodie baskets for our grab bag.   Yum!  (for a complete menu email monafukumoto@gmail.com).  There was even a special appearance on stage by Devin "Ducky" Nakasone, and Shar Aoki.   Mahalo Suzi for getting us seats near the stage.  And Mahalo to Funkshun for kick-starting our Christmas season with some of our favorite Christmas songs.   Please enjoy these captured golden moments.   Happy Holidays & Don't Stop The Music!

Steve Lucas, A Fellowship in Jazz Featuring Tim Tsukiyama on sax at Ige's Restaurant & 19th Puka (11/28/2012)

It's another cool Wednesday night in Aiea with a Fellowship In Jazz! Diners can enjoy free Jazz every 2nd, 3rd and 4th Wednesday at Ige's Restaurant & 19th Puka, between 6:30 pm and 9:30 pm. On this particular night, the band featured guest artist Timothy Tsukiyama, on saxophone.   Our first impression, Tim appeared a very quiet and humble person.   That all changed once he blew his sax. We knew then that we were in for a great evening of music.  Here's what we found on the web about Tim:

Royal Hawaiian Band website shares the following:  Born in Honolulu, Tim graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1977, attended Lawrence University earning a B.A. in Music. Professionally, Tim has performed with Ray Charles, the Temptations, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Honolulu Symphony, University of Hawaii Saxophone Choir, Benny Golson, Michael Paulo, C and K, Kalapana, the Ornery Horns, and the Honolulu Jazz Quartet.
Tim’s experience in the Royal Hawaiian Band
has been a lot more exciting than he ever imagined but also very rewarding and entertaining!

Global Music Supply shares:  Tim is a member of the Honolulu Jazz Quartet, plays first alto with the Royal Hawaiian Band, and works as a freelance musician with several local groups.   Most recently, Tim has performed with Pauline Wilson, Noel Okimoto, Jeff Keeyer, Matt Catingub, the Honolulu Symphony, the Honolulu Symphony Pops, and the U.H. Saxophone Choir.   Tim is an active private lesson instructor, and has taught saxophone to students from (high schools) Roosevelt, Mililani, Leleihua, Moanalua, Iolani, Punahou, Farrington; and the University of Hawaii.

The adage 'music is an extension and expression of one's soul'.  Mahalo for sharing your beautiful music!   This was truly a Fellowship In Jazz!  Please enjoy these captured golden moments,
and Don't Stop The Music!

The Men In Grey Suits are doing it again!   From Waikiki to Kaka'ako......the Surfs Up every Sunday at Vice Inferno Brewery at the Ward Centers, from 4;00 pm to 6:00 pm.   How cleaver to place the stage right on the edge of the lanai over looking the Auahi Street entry driveway.  Curious shoppers and diners could not help but be drawn to the rhythmic beats of 'Surf Rock'!

What is Surf Rock?  Check out this link for its history: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Surf_music

What a fantastic combo!   Great Music, Delicious Inferno Wood Burning Pizza, and Cold Hawaiian Isle Brewing Company Beer!   Who can enjoy this?   Well, on this particular day there was a large group celebrating a pre-wedding party. The entire group, the parents, grandparents, wedding party and the kids were all on the dance floor strutting their surf moves to Hawaii 5-0!   What a golden moment!

Sundays may never be the same here. But that's okay with us---Just Don't Stop The Music!

Woodrose live at Dots in Wahiawa (11-23-2012)

We arrived at Ige's in Aiea to find the neighborhood dark with a HECO power outage, so headed up north to Dot's in Wahiawa and discovered Woodrose.   One word 'Variety'.   This band covered it all - rock, blues, disco, R&B, latin, etc.   Their music sets took you on a journey back and forward from 1950 to current and back again.  They even did songs by one of our favs, The Carpenters, and Brazil 66!   It was fun reminiscing and singing along to tunes that we haven't heard for years.   Burning up the dance floor were the Wahiawa Line Dance Sisters.  These women have a different line dance for every song.   All together it was a very entertaining evening.   Kudos to Bernie of Kool Inspiration for another Kool show.  Mahalo! and Don't Stop The Music!

3rd Annual Pacific Rim Jazz Festival @ The Hawaii Convention Center (11-3-2012)

Receiving tickets on Halloween for this event was certainly 'A Treat!' This was our 1st PRJF, and will certainly not be our last! We were proud to see and hear our local talent sharing the stage and spotlight with other first class guest artists from the mainland, who filled the the evening with new and old favorites that kept our feet tapping, fingers clicking and heads swaying. There were no bad seats in the house. Even the brave swing danced in the aisles and belted out choruses. In the audience we spotted legendary saxophonist Gabe Baltazar and his wife Rose, Jazz and R&B artist Ginai Hill, American Idol semi-finalist singer Jordan Sagundo, Jazz singer Melinda 'MeiLing' Redira and Drum artists Brad Choi and Peter Factora. The evening even featured a surprise group of ghost busters chasing a ghost in the audience during Ray Parker Jr's song, 'Ghost Busters'. Unsurprisingly, the event went into overtime. Perhaps justification this may become a 2 or 3 day festival in the near future? We like! Proceeds from this festival will benefit the Kapolei Foundation, whom have granted over 500 scholarships to deserving students in the Leeward Community, to include the Michael Paulo Music Scholarship Award. (http://kapoleifoundation.org/) What a great way to nurture our young aspiring artists, and to perpetuate this great gathering of Jazz enthusiasts! Mahalo to all the performers and organizers of this great event! Enjoy these captured golden moments &

The Beat presents: “DISGUISE” 10-27-2012 at the Cest Si Bon

The location, the Cest Si Bon room at the Pagoda Hotel & Floating Restaurant. 'Cest Si Bon' - which in French means 'It's So Good!'

DISGUISE! presented by The Beat, was a night of music & dance by three unique bands, each with its own signature - 'Soulz', 'Chaos', and 'Funkshun'.

This was a night with lots of beautiful people - to include rock stars, super heros and villians, all being naughty and nice. It was also a night of surprises and danger - a Flash Mob, a Birthday celebration, and a Tsunami warning! (Thankfully we were safe and didn't have to evacuate) The night was packaged with delicious food, a costume contest, door prizes, candy, balloons, cupcakes and LED swords. This pre-Halloween dance party was indeed 'So Good!' Mahalo to Suzi Shimada, all the Bands, and all the many Hands that put this successful event together. Please enjoy these captured golden moments, and Don't Stop The Music!

Sandy Tsukiyama Live at Adega Portuguesa Restaurant & Bar (10-21-2012)

Adega means 'wine cellar'. Venha ouvir o pato e uma canção de ganso! (Portuguese translation: Come hear the duck & goose song!) It's Adega Restaurant Owner, Trigo's DeSilva's favorite! Adega Portuguesa Restaurant & Bar is Honolulu's only place for authentic Portuguese food, and Latin music from Brazil. Every Sunday night from 7:30 pm to 10 pm, Sandy Tsukiyama and her band play some of the best Latin Jazz in the islands. We were awed with Sandy's sultry voice and rhythmic Portuguese lyrics. Here is what the Adega Portuguesa Restaurant & Bar website (http://www.adegahi.com/) has to say about Sandy:

“A Honolulu native, Sandy Tsukiyama grew up in a musical household. She discovered Spanish language and Music Theory at her alma mater, Roosevelt High School and received a BA in Ethnomusicology from the University of Hawaii at Manoa. At UH she continued in Spanish and began studying Brazilian Portuguese. Fascinated by bossa novas on radio jazz programs, she embarked on a quest to further investigate the music of Brazil. Her first vocal gigs were with Brazilian-inspired group, “Ohta-San’s New Thing” and the Ebbtides, in 1975. She began studying voice with Marilyn Kim and was backup singer and percussionist for Nohelani Cypriano. In 1980, recipient of a Rotary Post-Graduate Fellowship for International Understanding, she studied Brazilian folk music traditions and voice at the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro Escola de Música. During her three-year stay there, she became immersed in the vibrant musical culture of the city. Fortunate to perform backup for Marku Ribas and Robertinho do Recife, along with numerous, well-known artists, Sandy appeared at various venues from posh piano bars such as Chiko’s Bar, Rive Gauche, and national TV broadcasts on Rede Globo. She was house vocalist for two years in the piano bar at Restaurante Antonino in the Lagoa District, where Lisa Ono, who later became Japan’s primary bossa nova exponent, would occasionally sit in. At the “Todos os Cantos” music festival, in Curitiba, Paraná, in 1981, she was accompanied by the yet unknown, Eliane Elias. While married to percussionist Carlinhos “Pandeiro de Ouro” de Oliveira, she befriended countless household names on the Brazilian music scene”

You can also catch Sandy on her Radio Show "Brazilian Experience", every Sunday afternoon at 4 pm on KIPO Hawaii Public Radio on 89.3 FM.

Enjoy these captured golden moments. Felicidades e não pare a música! (Portuguese Translation: Cheers! & Don't Stop The Music!)

Steve Lucas ~ A Fellowship in Jazz featuring Eddie Ramirez at Ige’s Restaurant & 19th Puka (10-17-2012)

Jazz was definitely in the air in Aiea! With lots of Rooting & Tooting too! Steve Lucas ~ A Fellowship in Jazz, featuring special guest artist, Eddie Ramirez! Fans and Diners were treated to a special performance by extraordinaire trumpet and flugelhorn player, Eddie Ramirez. Eddie, member of The Society of Seven, Phase 7 and many other noted musical groups, was visiting from Fremont, CA. Cannonball Trumpets, which Eddie highly endorses, shares the following bio:

"Eddie brings over 45 years of international show and tour experience to the state. Included in his repertoire is big band, swing, Dixie, classical, jazz funk, Latin, classic rock, gospel and R&B. Eddie's classic training stated at age 7, when he became the youngest trumpet soloist in the Philippines. He went on to write and perform musical scores for TV show and moves in the mainland, and perform with touring artist such as Stan Getz, Nancy Wilson and Ann Margaret. He played lead trumpet with several big bands, toured with his own Latin band 'Brass Wave', mastered free form jazz in Germany, and honored his multi-instrumentalist skills on tours throughout Asia, Japan, Hawaii, Germany, Canada and the U.S. His arrangement of Chick Corea's "Spain" for the Honolulu Symphony, which he also performed with them, remains a milestone in his career. He also perfected holding a note indefinitely and playing two-horns-atonce, for which he is probably best known in the islands. Eddie spent the 80's on stage and TV in Hawaii, making albums and touring with Hawaii's top show group Society of Seven. He then toured with Bobby Womack on his Resurrection Tour thought the U.S., and Joe Louis Walker throughout Europe. In the Bay area, he's done guest solos on CD for Danilo, Sista Monica, Elaine Lucia, Chuck Prolio's OMB, IshikoJam, Kirk Casey, and music for CD-rom games by Electric Arts. Eddie is currently teaching adults and children music theory, piano, flute, trumpet and vocals and freelancing with Big City Revue, Mich Woods (rocket 88 swingband), Rudy Salvini's Big Band, and Danilo. His first U.S. CD "Velvet Fist" was released in 1999. He produced multiple CD's that contains love song of Andrea Bocelli and Josh Groban. He is currently at work on his next, entitled "The Eddie Ramirez Project"."

Mahalo to Ron Ige, owner of Ige's Restaurant & 19th Puka for providing not just delicious food, but also a stage/showroom that serves the community well. This was truly 'A Fellowship In Jazz' to remember! Enjoy these captured Golden Moments & Don't Stop The Music!

Men in Grey Suits live at Jimmy Buffett's Honolulu Surfing Museum (10-11-2012)

It's Surf Rock! at the Jimmy Buffett's Honolulu Surfing Museum in the lobby of the Holiday Inn Waikiki Beachcomber Resort.  Every Thursday night from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm.

"Men In Grey Suits is Honolulu's newest Surf Rock band playing music of The Ventures, Dick Dale, and many others including many movie and TV theme songs of the 60's that were strongly influenced by surf guitar sounds like Hawaii 5-0 and The Pink Panther Theme.  Although beginning as a cover band, material is being written for a debut album to be released in December 2012.

Formed by guitarist Chad Hamman who was visited in his sleep one night by a Kahuna telling him that Honolulu needs a new Surf Rock Band to liven things up a bit.  A few well placed advertisements drew Robbin Henley, Jr., Florida native surfer and guitarist extraordinaire in to the band.  Soon followed by bassist Michael Clare, refugee from the space rock/fusion world of Gong who found himself stranded in paradise and the lure of the psychedelic tinged sounds of the surf guitars pulled him in.  Drummer Alvin Fejarang, a veteran of 20 years in the phenomenal Oahu band Kalapana couldn't resist the challenge of providing the rhythms and the rest is for the future to uncover."

Local musicians backed up the Summer Soul Festival on 8-10-2012 at the NBC Arena

The Summer Soul Festival included The Crystals, The Manhattans, The Shirelles, and The Stylistics!
The groups did not bring their full bands, in fact, one group only had their bass player, another had a keyboard player, and another a drummer.  Tom Moffat asked Steve Lucas to get a band together to perform for the evening.  Working with the few musicians from the mainland, Steve Lucas and his local musician friends created a sound that was flawless.  They had less than two weeks to learn all the songs with only 1 rehersal just hours before the actual concert.  Our local guys did Hawaii proud!  Thank you Tom Moffat for supporting local musicians!

The Fabulous Steve Lucas Band :
Steve Lucas (guitar)
Bill Noble (saxophone/flute)
Elliot Maker (trumpet)
Miles Yoshida (bass)
Bob Hernandez (bass)
Butch Nicolas (drums)
David Haynes (drums)
Marshall Kaniho (keys)
Jeff Gerona (congas/percussions)

This was indeed a golden moment to capture.
Please listen to the music and enjoy!
